Description

In the early 90s I picked up this mini series and it turned out to be one of those stories that cemented my love of Kitty Pryde. I hadn't read Mutant Massacre yet, Claremont explained that this is part of the aftermath of that event when Shadowcat is trapped as a living ghost. Reed Richards refused to help and now the X-Men have turned to Doctor Doom. But Kitty knows that if he succeeds he's the hero and if he fails, at least he tried. Either way they owe him a favor.

What got me about this story is that it wasn't meant to be mature in nature like the DC Vertigo stuff I would read a few years later. But the way this mini-series handled the idea of a teenager who has helped save the universe multiple times being willing to commit suicide just left such an impression on me.

Fast forward to 2022 and this page came up at Heritage but at the time I just wasn't buying pieces in that price range yet. I had just resumed collecting OA after a twelve year break and it killed me to miss this. Then in 2024 I saw this piece resurface at Comic Connect and I knew that I had to right my mistake.

A self contained splash of artwork with more emotion depth than a typical story. The Austin inks know just the right amount of weight to put in the line to match the tone of the words.
