Description

Artist: William Frederick Woodington ARA (1806-1893)
Title: The Three Marys at Golgotha
Medium: Pencil on paper
Size: 250 x 350mm
Signed: No. Inscribed on the mount and verso
Notes: Woodington was primarily a sculptor. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1825, was appointed curator of the Academy's School of Sculpture in 1851, and was elected an Associate in 1876. Along with his son they worked together on the bronze panel of Battle of the Nile and plinth of Nelson's Column.
I think this drawing could have been for a relief sculpture.
Also the models used look like the pre Raphaelite �stunners�, Elizabeth Siddal, etc?

From how clear and precise it is, this really does look like a drawing based on an existing sculpture and not the other way around as a design to one.

It could be, but my hunch is it's the study to work from. But we'll never know. I've found some of his sculptures online, but not this one. I trained as a sculptor for a year, and taking away on stone and marble is so much tougher than building up with clay.
