DescriptionHere is the other Calamai drawing I have.Artist: Baldassare Calamai (1787-1851) Title: Battaglia di Campaldino [Battle of Campaldino] Medium: Pencil drawing on paper Size: 270 x 360mm Signed: no, inscribed with artist and title (in the margin). Notes: Christie’s auction sticker, numbered #154 on the back The Battle of Campaldino was fought on 11 June 1289 between the Guelphs, predominantly Florentines, and the Ghibellines, predominantly from Arezzo. Dante Alighieri and Cecco Angiolieri, among others, took part in it. Calamai never achieved the greatness he was projected to achieve due to his gambling and debauchery. Social/Sharing |

I feel for the horse the most. It doesn't know what we are fighting for, but must die for a cause. It's so great with the crosshatches lending more emotional depth to the suffering.

Thanks. Yes well said about the horses, but many people also die with no real understanding of the politics behind the scene.

I agree about the horse Marcus..but it is said that war horses were bred for their brutality...if a horse was too nice it didn't become a war horse...I think I read somewhere that when a battle was imminent a great war horse got excited and was extremely difficult to hold back from rushing in to kill people.

Thank you! Glad you liked the image, I also have another Calamai uploaded on CAF. I have many older artworks alongside Conan and more modern stuff. If you look in my galleries you will see 18th century works with the oldest around 1700. These artists were illustrators alongside being painters etc in their times, and no doubt would have done comic's if they had existed. You can also view the first published image of Frankenstein in a book. Anyway thank you.
