DescriptionGreat cover featuring Brainic's ship blasting into space. As with all of George's artwork, the detail on this piece is incredible!I should probably share the story as to how I came to own both this cover and the one to Action Comics #650 as it speaks volumes as to the kind of person George Perez was personally... I was living in Charlotte, NC in 1990 so of course I attended the Heroes Con that summer. It just so happened that George was a guest (he always tried to attend that show whenever possible as he was a big supporter of that Con). I was always a huge fan of his work, so while visiting his table I struck up a conversation with him, and as it turned out, we had a very good friend in common. After finding this out, George invited me to sit at his table and we talked for quite awhile about comics -- and especially Superman -- and many other subjects as the day progressed. Of course, George had brought some of his original art to sell and the pieces were all phenomenal. I had saved enough money to purchase one of the pieces that I wanted but not both. It was obvious that I was agonizing over which one of the 2 covers to get -- the cover to Action #649 or #650. As soon as I would decide on one, George would point out something special about the other, and I would change my mind again. He was definitely having some fun at my expense because I just couldn't make up my mind. Finally, he asked if he could decide for me, and I said, "sure, you tell me which one you would pick if you were me." So, he told me to buy the cover to Action #649. Of course, I would have been happy with either one, so I agreed, handed him the money and he handed me the cover art. Later, when I was walking off, I told him good-bye, and as I started to leave, he said, "don't forget your cover art." I stated that I had it in my hand as I held it up. That's when George said, "no, I mean your other piece," and he handed me the cover to Action #650. He said it was a gift, and he wanted me to have it. At first, I said that there was no way that I would feel right accepting something that valuable and I declined to take it. In fact, we went back-and-forth about this for several minutes. However, if you know George, he wasn't one to give up, and he finally made me feel that he truly wanted me to have it. I told him right then that both covers were very special to me, and that unless something very extraordinary occurred, they would always be a part of my collection. Over the next couple of years, I was able to attend the Heroes Con again, and whenever I was there I would meet with George for a meal or just to catch up and we became friends for a short time. But as life always gets in the way, I moved out of NC, started an entirely new career and unfortunately lost touch with him over the years. Cut to almost 30 years later... George came to town to do a signing at a local comic shop. Of course I went to see him but by then his heath was in decline and it had been years and years since we last spoke. I approached him with both original covers in hand and reminded him about how we had met all those years ago, and about his generosity in giving me a piece of artwork that I truly loved. I reminded him that I had promised him that they would be a permanent part of my collection because of what they meant to me, and I showed him that they were both still mine. He got a big smile on his face, and to my surprise, he did remember the entire situation. He truly seemed happy (and maybe a little impressed) that I really did still own both covers all of these years later. Unfortunately, we didn't get to talk much as there were a lot of people waiting to get his autograph and it was obvious that he wasn't in very good health even then, but that was OK because I accomplished what I set out to do -- let him know that even 30 years later, his kindness and his generosity were still remembered. It wasn't too terribly long after that visit that he passed away. I know that most comic fans would say that the world lost a great artist that day -- and they would be right. However, to me he was so much more than that because I was lucky enough to see a side of him that not everyone had the privilege of seeing. I will always remember how I felt the day the he handed me the artwork that I was so crazy about and asked nothing in return. So, I can only say that these 2 Perez covers mean just as much to me now as they did 30 years ago, and it would be almost impossible for me to ever part with either piece. But more than anything else, I just wanted to share what a fine person George was and what a generous nature he had to his fans. The world lost a great artist and a great man the day he died, and he will truly be missed. Social/Sharing |

He dominated the 80's and was all set to continue this pace going into 90's from looking at this one.

I really enjoyed your story of how you got this art. I never got a chance tomeet Mr. Perez, but by all accounts he was a wonderful person, in addition to being an all-time great comic artist.
