DescriptionIt seems like 2023 has been a year of making up for past mistakes. One of those mistakes was not buying a page or two from Duncan Fegredo’s work on Flowers for Rhino, a two issue collaboration with Peter Milligan from Spider-man’s Tangled Web. Even though Splash Page Art had a number of them available for years, I never pulled the trigger and they slowly dwindled into the hands of other collectors. Fast forward to just before this year’s Baltimore Comicon. I saw this great page available from Joseph Melchior, who is now repping Duncan. I reached out to reserve it and waited to hear back as I headed down to Baltimore for the con with my pal, Rich. On Sunday, I noticed an email from Joseph in my inbox. He said the page was mine and apologized for the delay in response. He’d been traveling to Baltimore for the con. Talk about great timing. As the show wound down to its final hour, I went over to introduce myself to Joseph and, serendipitously, he had the page with him. Not only did I get to take art home with me from the show, I saved on PayPal fees and shipping from across the pond. Quite the stroke of good fortune. As for the page itself, it’s a gem. Taking its cues from the Daniel Keyes story Flowers for Algernon, Milligan and Fegredo weave a tale of Rhino undergoing an experimental procedure to increase his intelligence. It’s a long standing favorite of mine, due in large part to the creative team’s ability to humanize Rhino and make him a sympathetic character. This page is a perfect example of that, as Fegredo and Milligan remind us that cruel words penetrate even the thickest skin. I also really appreciate how Fegredo mixes up the camera angles in each panel to emphasize Rhino’s size before ending it with a tiny inset panel that makes him look small and alone. Social/Sharing |

This reminds me of the Frankenstein movie when the monster meets the girl. The panel design with POV changes is well done. Duncan's art is sight to behold. Congrats.

The tear in his eye, if you believe it, is the strongest part of the page as something emotional has gotten through his thick hide.

A masterful job of conveying an emotional scene.

Rhino has always been one of my favorite Spidey villains. I love everything about this page.
