DescriptionSkippy by Percy Crosby is one of the best kid centered strip ever. Charles Schulz credited it as an inspiration for Peanuts (click the first link). You can find a few years of the strip on GoComics. The Library of American Comics has collected the entire series.I haven't seen a lot of Skippy strips in the wild or on CAF and never expected to find one that I could afford, but I got lucky. It's only two panels, but it tells a complete story. I love it. It's also the smallest comic strip that I've seen - 4.5" by 16.5". Most are longer and taller. If you don't know Skippy, there's background information on the links above and a few more in what follows including the Skippy trademark controversy and battle. Read on! Percy's daughter, Joan Crosby Tibbetts, has a tribute site that you may find interesting. She also published a collection of the one long form story found in Skippy - Skippy vs. the Mob. The Fantagraphics website says this about the book: Presenting a brand new book from our good friends at Rosebud Archives: Skippy Vs. the Mob. "This important new book collects, for the first time, the only continuity Percy Crosby ever drew in his widely-syndicated Skippy comics, and features a comprehensive essay by the artist’s courageous daughter, chronicling an astonishing history of fraud, persecution, and betrayal. Here, for the first time, is a story ripped from the headlines — a spiraling saga that grew far too large for one man to handle." Rosebud's Jonathan Barli showed me a copy at the MoCCA fest last weekend and it is a beautifully produced package. The interesting thing about this book is that it has vanished. I ordered my copy when I first saw an ad for it, but since then I've never seen another copy. Rosebud Archives quit selling it not long after I bought my copy and is now defunct. I'd love to know what happened because the Skippy vs. the Mob story book is excellent and the accompanying essay is fascinating telling the story of how Percy lost control of his character. I will not buy Skippy peanut butter. If you'd like to read a summary of the Trademark controversy addressed in her essay, read the Foley Hoag, LLP blog called Skippy v. Skippy: The Great Peanut Butter Trademark Wars. Here's an interesting interview from Print Magazine with Joan Crosby Tibbetts. It contains a broken link to a article called "Skippy is Dead, R.I.P." which led to Joan's interview; it's still around so I've provided that link. Also, the Skippy run from 1925 to 1936 was reprinted: Social/Sharing |
