Description"War Story" by Robert Kanigher.I bought this comic, read it as a kid, and still have it. Famous newspaper reporter Ernie Patterson -- a doppelgänger for the famous GI Joe reporter Ernie Pyle -- tags along with Sgt. Rock and Easy Company on their patrol. They attack a castle they are taking fire from. Tony Saladino, a soldier who earlier introduced himself to the reporter, swims across the moat, climbs the raised draw bridge, and pushes a grenade through the chain mechanism, bringing down the bridge. Later in the story, Rock lets Tony to sit on the castle's throne for a photo. However, he's shot by a sniper as the reporter prepares to take the picture. The story continues with more tragic losses and ends with the reporter throwing away his notebook titled "War Story." The wind blows across the blank pages to one with a single sentence, "War is hell!" Social/Sharing |

Rock solid page! The circle frame close up is perfectly placed as they aim straight up to the next panel!

Great Heath war page. Love the use of verticality here.

I'm always amazed by how clean Russ's pages are, not a drop of white paint to be seen and no replaced panels. He always knew where best to put the camera when staging these action scenes. From talking to him, I got the sense that it was instinctual and not something he gave much conscious thought to.

Thank you for your insightful comments. They are very interesting. I never noticed until now that his pages don't have any whiteout. Remarkable. PS - Your gallery is impressive. I've visited it many times. I'm just now beginning to appreciate the Fleetway covers. I wasn't aware of those publications when I was growing up because they weren't in the convenience stores and tobacco shops. That said, I've recently enjoyed reprints of Battle Action stories, particularly HMS Nightingale, and the new ones by Garth Ennis.
