Description

This is the penciled prelim to page 17, the last page from Marvel Comics' RED SONJA #3 by Frank Thorne, drawn in 1977. You can compare it to the published version in Additional Images to see the differences, including:
- There are differences in the top two tiers. I prefer the first panel in the prelim to the inset in the published version because there is another close-up of Sonja on the page.
- I also prefer the crowd scene in the background of the wide center panel to the birds in the published version.
- But the most significant difference is in the last panel and the dialogue. In the published version, Mikal says he will ride along with her and she agrees ... "if only for a little while." In the prelim, he asks her to stay and she says yes. Then she says, "Kiss me boy." Roy Thomas wrote a note to Thorne in the margin in blue pencil that says "No coy look please." So the come hither look in the prelim becomes a frown in the published version. Needless to say, I prefer the prelim :) [Autographed by Roy]

This is really interesting and I appreciate your analysis of it. I thought that that her word bubble at the end was: "Kiss me, Roy" rather than "boy". – A joke for Roy Thomas?

Either way, Roy was all business with his comments.

I think you're right! It does say "Roy" not "boy". No wonder he was not pleased. Good catch!
