Description

This is a big deal for me - a Sheldon Mayer S&S cover from the original run. The lot contained not only the cover, but the color guide and the printer's proof. Both of those images can be found in the Additional Images section. Also in the Additional Images, you will find the cover as printed and the cover to issue 24 which has the same concept. This is one of two times that Sheldon used the same cover idea more than once.

I think this caps my Mayer collecting. I have:

A published one-page story from issue 93 here,
What appears to be the Sunday Comic sample from the attempt to syndicate the strip which features a complete adventure plus his famous paper dolls here,
A cover preliminary here that I purchased from his granddaughter, Chelle Mayer,
A photocopy of a birthday card for his mother with the original art of the last panel here,
A photocopy of Chelle's birth announcement here, the original art for the last panel was on eBay once, but I didn't bid enough.
The front and back covers to a Santa and Rudolph treasury here.

The Heritage Auction Description reads:

Sheldon Mayer Sugar and Spike #91 Cover Original Art with Production Color Guide and Press Proof (DC, 1970). For a series that had 98 issues, it is remarkable that we have only had a couple of covers before! This cover featuring "Tomorrow's Teen-Agers" (today) is actually an original art re-work of the cover for Issue #24 (from 1959). It was created in ink over graphite on Bristol board. The image has been trimmed and affixed to a Sparta Bristol board with an overall image area of 10" x 15". The header banner, logo, and price are stat paste-ups. The text balloon is hand-lettered text paste-up. There is glue residue near several of these paste-ups. Toned and in Very Good condition. Also included are the printer's reference color guide, and the printer's press proof.

15 cent covers are more rare for DC books and a Mayer S&S seem to be harder to find than for the superhero genre.

Love Sugar & Spike and this is one great cover. It was shocking how low the bid was on this prior to the live auction and I thought I actually had a shot on it.. but really glad it found a home with someone who is an even bigger fan. Thanks for sharing it. Cool that the other printing pieces were included too.
