DescriptionOriginal art to the 1969 Marvel Mania International membership card by the King! Picked this up a long time ago from a great collector. You will see the name Robert Latimer inked in as the member in good standing. Robert or "Uncle Bob" as we called him in the 80's was the top art collector in the hobby. He had all the best Kirby art, EC art and also all the great Barry Smith pieces. Plus some of the best Zeck art including Kraven's Last Hunt and all the covers complete. It was always a treat to see him at SDCC at the old convention center and look through his portfolios. Even artists like Mignola and Pratt would run over to see him open them up. Bob also had this original art signed by Stan and Jack once he got it. Being a Marvel fan all my life this is a favorite of mine. I even did an overlay with my son Jason's name dropping over Bob's. Happy New Year to all my fellow collectors!Social/Sharing |

Bob Latimer, now there's a name from the past. As far as collectors go, he was THE MAN in the 80's. Even though I was a newbie back then, even I knew his name. What a collector and what a collection. So cool you actually got something from him. Makes me wonder what else you might have managed to come away with from the Latimer vault.

That's fantastic Lance! A piece of Marvel history from one of the top collectors of all time! Remember when Bob brought the complete "Red Nails" by Barry Smith to SDCC when the rest of us might be able to purchase a single page of Smith art, he brings over 55 pages! Those were great times!

Hi Glynn. So was it Bob who Mike Thibodeaux acquired Red Nails from? Also, I recall that when I spoke to Mike about it over 20 years ago, it was incomplete. Missing one page, as I recall. Do you know if it was already incomplete when Bob owned it?

Hi Ruben, yes it was incomplete the day we looked through it at SDCC. And if I remember correctly it was 2 or 3 pages that were missing. Barry may have given or sold those before Bob acquired the story directly from Barry. At that time Bob had first shot on just about anything Barry had!

Thanks, Glynn. Bob was certainly a fortunate man back then! And yes, I wrone "one" page but I wasalso thinking it may have been two or three. Thanks for confirming that!

Bob Latimer is one of the well known old school names in the hobby, so I think it's even more special to attain such an incredible piece of original specialty art like this, as it adds a wonderful provenance.
