DescriptionIn my opinion, some of the best value in strip art can be found in Pogo. It had a multi-decade run, a huge amount of it managed to make its way into collectors' hands, and unfortunately it has become somewhat forgotten by the general public, all of which conspire to keep prices low. Regardless, Walt Kelly was an amazing cartoonist, with a knack for capturing a wide range of expressions on an equally wide variety of animal characters.I had been looking for a 1950s Pogo to add to my small collection of strip art, but wanted to find one that included both Pogo and Albert, and which had a funny gag/joke (as consistently solid as Walt Kelly's art was, I find the humor to be a little hit-or-miss), so I was happy when this strip from August 22, 1958 came along. Thanks, Monty. You've always had a lot of great examples from the series, so that means a lot coming from you.

He was very much in tune with the humor and place for his time, so many gags would just go over our heads without context, so it's great to find one that echoes through time that speaks to you.

Yep, a lot of the humor was always keyed in to the politics and culture of the day, and Kelly of course had a subtle knack for using word play, so some jokes aren't as readily apparent as others. I really liked the fact that the gag in this one would fit right in a vaudeville act or Looney Tunes cartoon, so it seems a little more timeless.
