This Krenkel, circa 1955, cracks me up.

The linework throughout is amazing. And the throne, the queen, her body language, her expression. The dude next to her, his body language and expression. And the prostrate Tarzan.

I don�t know whether it�s a study in confusion, embarrassment, or disdain. Or a riff on Fritz?

Frazetta and Krenkel did these pieces (see pic below) at the same time. There�s even some speculation that Frazetta did the pencils for this piece. Whatever.

Absolutely jawdropping Tarzan illustration by Roy Krenkel. Gorgeous pen and ink drawing of an imprisoned Tarzan, crawling on his hands and knees toward the seated Queen of this land. She looks away, disdainful of the prisoner whose fate rests in her hands. Beside her stands her watchful guard, holding his spear at the ready should the prisoner make a suspicious move. It's a tense moment in which the slightest wrong move could slay one or more of these people. They are on a tightrope, whether they know it or not, and their lives all depend on the next throw of the dice. What will it be?
