DescriptionWith today being the 4th of July, it's a time where we Americans celebrate the founding of our nation. And I can think of no better way to tribute that, than posting up an incredible piece featuring the most Patriotic hero of all time: Captain America! This page has even more meaning for me, as it is during the time John Walker was Cap. He was the first Captain America I ever read stories of, so the nostalgia of this is very high for me. But this image has both him and the original Cap, Steve Rogers (calling himself simply "The Captain" at this time). And this issue, in particular, is what sets them both upon the road to "round 2" in their very personal battle, that culminated to its climax several issues later. This is also the issue where John Walker's parents are murdered, and which sets him on the darker path the character would follow from this point on. So, there is much significance to this one, not just for me personally, but to the characters more broadly. Artist Kieron Dwyer will always be THE Cap artist, in my mind. The way he brings an exciting and dynamic edge to even a mundane scene, of something simple like this mission briefing, always made his work on the Star-Spangled Avenger so much fun and entertaining. Inker Al Milgrom, who's work most would describe as "utilitarian," brings a slick and professional sheen to Dwyer's work, showcasing that classic Marvel style. So, as you enjoy your cookouts and fireworks today, take a moment to remember what this day is truly all about and feel a little patriotic pride, to be living in the greatest nation on Earth. Not the least of which is because you can get to see awesome pieces of comic art, like this one right here! Happy 249th birthday, America! Social/Sharing |

Fantastic splash by Dwyer! Milgrom adds the dark inks and spot shadows to enhance the deep and personal stakes Walker has! The classic trope of the upstart vs the veteran! Captain America vs Captain America shakes the audience to its core about their beliefs if Cap is the mantle or the man!
