DescriptionThe 2023 Knoxville Fanboy Expo featured a reunion of several cast members from the Lord of the Rings films. Scott West made a smaller Eowyn poster which was given away to attendees; he also made this larger (22.5"x30") work and sold prints of it. West is perfectly capable of photorealism along the lines of Drew Struzan or Mark Raats, but on this piece (and the companion Eowyn piece) he opted for an Art Nouveau style inspired by Alphonse Mucha, with pastels and simpler lines nevertheless providing recognizable likenesses for all the actors. West dives deep into Tolkien lore for his design elements. The central ring contains all nine members of the Fellowship, plus Gollum, grasping for the ring. Frodo is the center, and Samwise fittingly the foundation. Inscribed upon the ring are the words found on the One Ring, the Black Speech language of Mordor rendered in Quenya letters. These are flanked left and right by Eowyn (appearing as the maiden of Rohan rather than the warrior of the Pelennor Fields) and the Witch-King of Angmar, with the spikes of his morning star mirrored by the spiky design around his head. The Celtic knot design above and below Eowyn is a plant, reflecting Tolkien's association of "good" with "nature." The design below the Witch-King and the Eye of Sauron takes on a web texture and a cluster of beady red eyes to remind us of Shelob the hellish giant arachnid. At the top, green (again, reflecting nature) letters in Quenya say, "Lord of the Rings." At the bottom, Dwarvish (Norse) runes transliterate into, "Fanboy Expo, Knoxville, Tennessee, July, 2023." The brown background has a bit of "Kirby Krackle" created by applying salt to the wet watercolor paint. My scanner tends to render images with more red than they really have; see the additional images for a more color-faithful photo with the artist. Social/Sharing |
