Description

Dick Ayers co-created the Ghost Rider character, a western hero inspired in part by the popular song "Ghost Riders in the Sky" first heard in 1948. Marvel Comics acquired the rights to the character in the mid-1960s. When Marvel introduced the motorcycle-riding version of Ghost Rider in the 1970s, the name of the western hero was changed to Night Rider. This Ayers illustration of the original Ghost Rider was commissioned by another fan; I was able to buy it through a Heritage auction.

Getting back to the song for just a moment, it was performed by many artists, including Gene Autry, Marty Robbins, and Johnny Cash, but the version I remember was sung by Vaughn Monroe, who had a wonderful baritone voice. At an early age -- perhaps four or five years old -- I listened to my Dad's record, hard vinyl and nearly the size of an album in diameter. Monroe's haunting interpretation was more than a little scary for a young boy like me, conjuring up images of ghostly cowboys and fire-snorting horses forever doomed to chase the devil's herd of cattle across the endless sky.

Such a majestic presentation by Ayers with Banshee's giant mane and mid air leap balanced out by Ghost Rider's cape!

This hearkens back to the 50's and 60's work on Ayers on Ghost Rider. The exaggerated length of Banshee creates the mystical aura of Ghost Rider.
