Description

Italian comics tend to have a lengthy prologue to set the scene upon which the main character arrives; perhaps it has something to do with the longer European perspective on history. This issue begins with the story of the titular tsunami, and how hi-tech sci-fi equipment failed to detect the natural disaster. The caption reads:

“The second coincidence involved the Oceanographic Analysis Department of New Salem on the East Coast. Technicians Harper and Salesman had chosen that day to temporarily deactivate the central computer, upgrading its cards with replacements. Although the secondary computer was active, it provided only standard monitoring functions and not a complete satellite fault detection program, so the lesser problems went undetected!”

“The Bottom Pressure Recorder located in the Boorman trench, 4.5km deep, in the central Pacific, worked perfectly. The BPR detected the cause of the problem in the explosion of an underwater caldera on the side of Peterson Canyon, an explosion of rare power... sudden and devastating! The data collected by the BPR were directly transmitted to the Tidalwave 8 toroidal buoy, which in turn began the telemetric transmission to the Lesat 6 satellite but, as we know, to no avail!”
