Description19 x 24As I've begun to catch up and do some scanning, getting some good images of my Paul Pope pieces has been a highlight. This is the opening page to the opening story of the first Strange Tales anthology from Marvel. It brought together a who's who of indie comics creators to play in the Marvel sandbox. Not all the stories were great, as is the case for any anthology but Paul started it off rocking with an incredibly fun Inhumans tale starring, Lockjaw. The story begins with the Inhumans preparing to feed Lockjaw some great dog food before being interrupted to fight an enemy. Each time they are successful, they are once again interrupted and Lockjaw begins to take things into his own paws to make sure he can get back to his meal. A fun and funny story that gives us a different twist on Pope's usual. It's obvious he grew up on comics and Kirby is in his DNA. I love this opening title page. The fluidity, movement that Paul is able to create in a static image and non-action scene is what makes him truly amazing. The expressions on everyone's faces, the movement of Medusa's hair, and the anticipation on Lockjaw creates a fun tension urging you on to turn the page to see what happens next. An amazing talent that we are blessed to be able to experience as comics fans. Social/Sharing |

What a great splash page. Paul Pope brings so much character and uniqueness in his style that it always seem to add to the story. I have yet to get any Pope work in my collection . I need to get on that. Great addition!

Fantastic Pope page! Love Medusa and Lockjaw here especially. With the size of his pages 19" x 24" are you scanning in pieces somehow and combing them for final image or do you have a scanner that's larger than that size (if so, super jealous lol)? Just curious because I've never been able to get a better image of my Batman Year 100 page even since I got a scanner since it can only handle up to like 12" x 18" or so tops

Thanks Kavi! Yeah my scanner is even smaller than yours. Basically like A4 size. So I get like 9 scans of the various sections on this piece and then photomerge in photoshop. Definitely a pain but worth it after it's done.

Good on you for the patience and work put into that for our benefit to see it on CAF! I haven't yet tried that for a larger piece than my scanner can handle (besides 2 sides of a DPS and lazily merging those without much tweaking) - but now I suppose I should give it a shot eventually.

Holy shit, Jason, time to get yourself an 11" x 17" scanner so you can scan these pages in only 4 passes instead of 9! 😂
Great looking page and I'm sure everyone will be shocked to read this, but I like this one better than most of the Batman pages he has done that I've seen!

I'm a big fan of his interiors, which not enough are available outside of Batman. If you like this, you'll love my Wednesday Comics pages.

Best superpower ever. Being able to operate two can openers at the same time. This would increase production by at least, I don't know, 8 perfect. Math was never my strong suit.

Lovely family portrait as they all lavish their attention to Locklaw! Medusa's hair is a great vehichle for Pope's brush line flow to take hold and be a presence in both panels. Also, the elbow of Karnak forms a nice tangent to dip below and tie momentum of the family feeling.

I love it! Lockjaw always steals the show when he makes an appearance. Great meld of 60s Kirby and modern vibes

Killer composition, and love this whispy kind of line work...a maestro with that brush. And what a great show of Lockjaw :) Congrats!
