Description

There are great teams in sports that I love in growing up over the years. First because my Opa or Grandfather is German I always root for the German team in the World Cup and it's always a joy when they win. Then because I live in the Bay Area in California in Football is was the great 49er teams with Joe Montana and Steve Young with all their championships. In Basketball it is the Golden State Warriors with Steph Curry and their many championships. But my first love and maybe my favorite team ever is the Oakland A's of the 70's who won the World Series in 72,73 and 74. Three in a row. All when I was in High School. In fact I went to all four World Series games in 73 when they beat the Mets in 7 games. The tickets bought by my father for 15.00 each. My favorite player on that team and maybe ever in sport is Jim "Catfish" Hunter. Met him once at a signing and had maybe 25 items signed by him. One of the saddest things I ever saw was a day he was honored at the Oakland Coliseum and could not lift his arms as he had ALS. His grandson threw out the first pitch.
Catfish passed away 9/9/99 at the age of 53.
Yesterday was my birthday and we had a little party. Of course my good friend Marcus Wai came by with cake and a host of gifts. It was at the bottom of the pile that I found these three art cards done of Catfish by my other friend Manix Abrera. I am deeply touched by this gift and wanted to show these today as the date is very fitting. Thank you to Catfish and Marcus and Manix for these great memories.

Lazy stadium night
Catfish on the mound.
"strike three, " the umpire said,
Batter have to go back and sit down.
Catfish, million-dollar-man,
Nobody can throw the ball like Catfish can.
Used to work on Mr. Finley's farm
But the old man wouldn't pay
So he packed his glove and took his arm
An' one day he just ran away.
Catfish, million-dollar-man,
Nobody can throw the ball like Catfish can.

I have to admit, give nthat they are essentially the same size as sketch cards, getting Manixized versions of your favourite baseball cards is an awesome idea! I would get one of the Ricky Henderson rookie. Thanks for sharing the story as well, Lance. I can't believe you went to all 4 home games of the 1973 world series! Amazing!

When our family immigrated to the U.S. back in 1970, it did not take me very long to discover what an embarrassment of riches we had here for bay area sports fans.  In SF, I started following the John Brodie led 49ers.  And for baseball, I was lucky enough to catch the tail end of both Bobby Bonds and Willie Mays SF Giants careers.  The SF teams would both enjoy dynasties in later decades.  But of course in the 1970’s it was all about the Oakland Raiders and the Oakland A’s.  I loved going to A’s games.  Especially on giveaway games like bat day.  I loved those cool green bats they used to give away.  Of course being the stupid kids that we were, as soon as the game was over, we would go out and hit rocks with them and pretty much destroyed them the same day.  My last bat day was from the 1990 season celebrating their 1989 championship.  Still have it right here.  Anyway, happy birthday and thanks for stirring up some nice memories.  Strangely enough, I turned 65 last week and Marcus never showed up with cake or balloons, much less free artwork.  LOL

Lance,

Can you save Eric a balloon?  We can give it to him when we have lunch in Alameda.

Marcus

P.S. You can invite Eric too.

This is such a fun original idea- and beautiful story behind it. A true testament to friendship and collecting. Nice work!

Ah, the early '70's As were epic - one of the all time great teams. And those names, almost like comic book characters from an old Western: Blue Moon Odom, Rollie Fingers, Sal Bando, Joe Rudi, Vida Blue, Jesus Alou, Catfish . . . and Reggie Jackson. They sounded like superstars, they looked like superstars, and they played like superstars.
