DescriptionWe met Renate Yilmaz early in the previous issue but haven't learned anything about her except that she's an architect. High time for some back story: “Kol’covo Airport, Yekaterinburg, Russia.” “Did I really sleep the whole time? Good heavens, excuse me... the plane puts me to sleep.” “We noticed. I don’t have the heart to admit that I slept during the flight too. It would ruin my image as a man of action, always on the alert.” “Mgh? Rghm?” “Oh, 'What image'? Thanks, old man.” “From what I read, Yekaterinburg is one of the major Russian cities. It is located 1667 km from Moscow and is situated on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains.” “Yes, if I’m not mistaken, its position marks an ideal border between the European and Asian parts of Russia.” “Yes, it is a sort of watershed between two halves of the same apple... I can totally understand. I also have two natures. I am German, but also Turkish.” “Turks are the largest immigrant community in Germany, right?” “Exactly. My family arrived in Germany about fifty years ago. I was born and raised in Munich, with all the pros and cons.” “What are you referring to?” “Well, Bavaria is a beautiful region, you know, and together with North Rhine-Westphalia it hosts Germany's largest Turkish community, but these are also the areas where nationalist and neo-Nazi groups gather the largest memberships.” “Uhm, I understand. And your family had problems?” (Flashback to her youth begins) “Renate! Don't run!” This story was written before the recent chilling of Russian-Western relations, so it envisions easy passage for a German, an American, and a Neanderthal into the heart of Siberia. The upper right panel prominently contains two foreground characters who are not part of the story. I asked Sforza whether he sneaked a couple of real life friends into the scene for a cameo, but no, they're products of his imagination. Social/Sharing |

Oh wow, the only indication of the flashback transition was that one rounded corner.
