Description

This is one of our grails in our collection.

More than 12 years after the publication of the iconic Kingdom Come series by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, Geoff Johns collaborated with Alex to allow an appropriate epilogue for Superman in the Kingdom Come universe, re-painting and refreshing memories, from another perspective, the final scenes of Kingdom Come, where Superman is trying to pull down the United Nations building, his awareness, the shared kiss with Wonder Woman and then what happens after.

This is page 19 of the final issue #22 of the "Thy Kingdom Come" storyline contained in the Justice Society of America Vol 3 issues, that started from issue #9.

This amazing artwork is the second of the last three story pages that winds up the epilogue. The first shows a scene 10 years and 20 years after the original ending of the Kingdom Come story, this second page shows 100, 200 and 500 years after, and the final page shows an old Clark/Kal, 1,000 years later, in his retirement (or in an updated disguise including a walking cane), admiring the Legion of Superheroes flying overhead.

While Alex's cover art are amazing in detail in of itself, they usually represent only one scene, being able to enjoy three separate scenes, where Superman and Wonder Woman, together, proudly watch their children fly off into space, reflecting on the repercussions of global warming and then a resilient and hopeful replanting/regrowth of the world (also coming full circle to when we first see Clark/Kal in Kingdom Come trying to replant in Kansas after the nuclear fallout from Captain Atom).

I have included close up photos of each scene to just show the appreciation of Alexs' skill in painting in such amazing detail for an internal page (Clark/Kal in the 500 years scene is just over 2" on the artwork and we can still appreciate his glasses, jawline and focus while harvesting corn!). Noting, of course, the photos were taken of the art whilst it lays under the museum acrylic as opposed to scans.

Thanks again to Sal and Alex, it is truly a privilege and honour to have this in our home.

Beautiful as part of the story or just as a standalone painting by Ross.  Three different scenes with three different approaches.  Each one has an inspirational message for mankind who will aspire to learn and explore, deal with disasters, and rebuild for a brighter future for all.

Thanks for your thoughts Marcus, totally agree, especially as it shows that they learned the lessons from the main Kingdom Come storyline (no major repeats of the battles ovee the "right way" to lead/role model) and are able to collectively explore and solve other opportunities for the next millennia, with Clark/Kal aware their legacy is sustained and evolves.
