DescriptionAmazing Spider-Man vol. 1 #256 Page 8.Release Date:May 29, 1984 Cover Date: September, 1984 Appearing in "Introducing... Puma!" Writer(s): Tom DeFalco Penciler(s): Ron Frenz Inker(s): Josef Rubinstein Colorist(s): Christie Scheele Letterer(s): Joe Rosen Editor(s): Danny Fingeroth ***** In 2022, page 25 of issue #8 of the Secret Wars comic book, in which Spider-Man appears wearing a black suit “for the first time” (this is debatable), was auctioned on HA, breaking a record in the auction world by fetching $3.36 million. The page is supposed to be so highly priced because that suit would eventually be revealed to be that of the anti-hero Venom. But that auction not only broke the barrier that existed until then in the world of comic art auctions, but also crushed the dreams of many modest collectors who saw how the possibility of getting a Spider-Man with “the black suit”, let alone if it was the original symbiote, was moving away with the same exponential proportion to its price. Resigned as one more to that fate, not even in my best dreams did I believe that I would be able to complete my collection with one of the few pages by Ron Frenz in which the symbiote appears before Spidey knows it, and shows his abilities, such as the organic web-slingers, or the automatic removal of part of the mask in response to his mental order. If we join that in almost every panel appears both Spider-Man and the Black Cat, the pose of the 4th panel in homage to Ditko (from whom Frenz was inspired), or the kiss to Felicia Hardy with the final backlight, it is a museum page. Let's not forget that the original symbiote we only saw him in 7 issues, between AS#252 returning from Secret Wars (and which is really his first chronological appearance) and AS#258 in which Reed Richard informs Spider-Man that his suit is a highly evolved symbiote and that it has attached itself to him mentally and physically, extracting him with a sonic ray. Subsequently the black suit that Spider-Man would wear is made in imitation of the previous one, but does not have the aforementioned powers. Thank you very much Jon for helping me to fulfill my dream, and to Toni for serving as a bridge at the reception. Social/Sharing |

I was lucky to have this page in my hands and to enjoy it in live. I can say that's simply STUNNING! It is so impressive and powerful. On this page is very remarkable the quality and intesity of inks. That fact makes the black suit much more impressive. The kissing panel is delicious. Huge congrats my friend.

Worthy of celebration! Great center panel that looks like a Ditko homage. Frenz and Rubinstein were doing that to ingratiate older readers to quickly accept the black suit. The romance angle is very sweet as well.

Bufff!

Yes! This is MY childhood's Spidey. ASM 257 is the first Spidey comic I remember getting from the comic shop and I of course had to go back and get 256. This one checks so many boxes...Frenz, black costume, Black Cat, storytelling, action, first Puma (love that character)..."has it all", as they say! Huge congrats!

Oooooh! A black suit Spidey page by Ron Frenz and Joe Rubinstein! Marvelous Amazing Spider-Man page with Spidey all decked out in the alien symbiote suit! Now remember, he still doesn't know that it's an alien symbiote! He still thinks it's just a costume! Boy, has he got a surprise in coming! Love that fourth panel with Spidey swinging across town. And then, that KISS in the 8th panel! Whoa--That is some serious lip-lock going on there! Who knows? Maybe the alien symbiote made him do it! Or maybe Black Cat made him do it. Or maybe he just wanted to. Whatever, this is one fantastic Amazing Spider-Man page. Just the thing every CAF gallery needs.

Tremendous page. Puma was a fun villian and you have to love a page with both Black Cat and Spidey's black suit. Congrats on getting this.

Amazing page (no pun intended)! I began reading "Amazing Spider-Man" around this time and the Frenz/DeFalco run is one that I hold very highly. It's great seeing Spidey and the Black Cat together, on this page. Thank you for sharing!

Simply fantastic Amazing Spider-Man page by Ron Frenz! Not only does it feature Spidey's black suit (back before he discovered it was dangerous) but it also features the Black Cat, who is always a pleasure to have in a story. Fantastic image of Spidery using his webbing in the second panel and a great scene of Spidey swinging through the city in the third panel. The only thing better is the scene of Spidey and the Black Cat kissing in the seventh panel. Or at least, I think it's even better. Terrific Spidey page, great pick-up!
