DescriptionOffered here is a nice example from the first six months of Modesty Blaise by Jim Holdaway.Holdaway was born in 1927 in Barnes Common, London. His formal art training came when he attended the Kingston School of Art. After spending two years of National Service in 1945 with the East Surrey Regiment, Holdaway went to Italy, Austria, and Greece he returned to art school on an ex-Serviceman's grant. To find work as an artist, Holdaway left England to work in France where he did advertising work. He returned to England to take care of his widowed mother, and went to work for Scion Books in Kensington, doing a variety of artwork, book jackets, comic books, and advertising. Making the decision to do freelance work from home, Holdaway began drawing for Odhams and Farringdon Press doing 64-page comics including Captain Vigour, The Football Comic, Steve Samson, Dick Hercules, Reveille, Tit-Bits, Comic Cuts, Junior Express (The Red Rider and Joanna of Bitter Creek, 1955), Mickey's Weekly (Davy Crockett, 1956), and Swift ("The Red Rider", 1956). In 1957, Holdaway replaced artist Alfred Mazure on the strip Romeo Brown, beginning a key association with writer Peter O'Donnell. The two were a perfect match and in 1963 Holdaway was selected as the artist for O'Donnell's Modesty Blaise comic strip that started in The Evening Standard in 1963. Holdaway drew Modesty Blais for the next seven years until he died suddenly in 1970 from a heart attack midway through illustrating the Modesty Blaise story "The Warlords of Phoenix". O'Donnell then enlisted Spanish artist Enrique Badia Romero to complete the strip and eventually succeed Holdaway as the strip's full-time artist. This is strip 176 and comes from the second Modesty Blaise story arc, entitled "The Long Lever", which appeared in the Evening Standard from 23 Sept 1963 to 2 Jan 1964. This is a nice example with great shots of Modesty and Willy, including a fight scene in the middle panel. The strip is rendered in ink over graphite, with an image area of 19.5" x 5.5" on a larger 20 x 7.7" art board. As is common with Modesty Blaise strips drawn by Holdaway, the art paper surface has been "skimmed" from its board backing. As usual with me, shipping is not included in the price and must be paid by the buyer. I prefer checks or money orders. If you need to use PayPal, I need payment sent as a "gift" or via "Friends and Family". I apologize in advance if that is an inconvenience, I have been asked if I will ship to Europe... I will, but it is expensive and if you need to use PayPal for an international transaction I warn that PayPal requires items of this value to be sent express (to get a signature) and insured (which declares the value for VAT). Just so you are aware. Social/Sharing |
