DescriptionThis is an unusual Dampyr issue, in that the first half is a Kurjak solo adventure. He goes undercover as "Wolf" (which is what "Kurjak" means in Bosnian) to meet a former spy (Sandri, whom we met on the previous page I posted) at a Chilean resort. A sniper picks off Sandri, and Kurjak takes refuge in the swimming pool, whose edge shields him from the sniper's angle. He's arrested and interrogated by Commander Baldwyn, Officer Marchesi, and Lieutenant Teresa Perez. The lights go out as a horde of vampires attacks the building, so Kurjak shows the police how to fight back. Dialogue from pages 32-44, leaving out a lot of screaming by humans and vampires: “What's going on?” “Wolf, don't move!” “Where would I go? The lights are back on, but a little too dim for your American-style interrogation.” “The backup generator has kicked in. But it's pitch-black outside. There's not a single light in the entire neighborhood.” “A blackout?” “Marchesi, have the sentry come in, and bar the front door.” “Commander, Lujanes was outside on guard duty, but he's disappeared!” “Bar all the doors! Tell everyone to get their weapons ready! Quickly!” “I-immediately!” (Kurjak) “It won't stop them, Baldwyn.” “If you know how, it's time to tell us, Wolf.” “And if you found weapons in my room, it's time to get them out, cop.” “I already told you. Someone beat us to it. What weapons did you have?” “It's not the weapons that matter. It's the ammo. Without it, we're screwed.” (Meaning his special anti-vampire bullets, coated in Harlan's Dampyr blood.) “Luckily, your generator runs on kerosene. Great for Molotov cocktails. A little senzine or methyl alcohol should be added to the kerosene to make the cocktail more flammable and explosive. Be careful not to soak the entire rag or it will explode in your hands.” “So, Detective Perez, that nail polish remover you use?” “Acetone? I only have two bottles. I also brought the soap, but I don't understand.” “They modify the effect. Acetone increases the radius of the flame. In the other bottles, adding a bar of soap will make it sticky like Greek fire. Remember to shake well, like a real cocktail.” “And these guerrilla weapons will be effective against those...?” “Against the undead? Fire damages them, but it doesn't destroy them quickly enough. Sometimes it depends on whether or not their Master is present. If the Condor isn't nearby, we'll at least be able to slow them down and disorient them.” “And to finish them off completely?” “You have to smash their chest at the heart. Not an easy task, because they move very quickly, and their thorax is thicker than that of a normal man. It requires a precise blow, given with a lot of force and a sharp stake, like the ones he's preparing.” “Absurd! Completely absurd! Molotov cocktails are fine... never sharp broomsticks. Is this man kidding us all, or am I? Why the hell are we listening to him?” “Because radios and cell phones won't help. Because we're besieged by dangerous opponents... And because I say so!” “I don't fully understand the nature of our adversaries either, Teresa. But I know what Sandri told me, and Wolf also shows that he knows them very well.” “Maybe they're both crazy. And you're crazy too.” “I don't believe a single…?” “There's someone, in the street. It seems like a lot… and among them… there's Lujanes!” “Hey, cops! Your colleague is here with us. And he's alive, but maybe not for long!” “Are you crazy? Let him go! Free my agent now, or you'll end up in prison for life!” “None of us fear prison, Detective. But we'll free your man, if in exchange you turn yourself over to us, along with the stranger you arrested this afternoon.” (meaning Kurjak) “They want us, Baldwyn. I guess we know too much. We can't give in to blackmail.” “I can shoot him in the head, Commander. Maybe Lujanes will be able to run toward us.” “Wait! We've got you in our sights! If you don't free my agent in ten seconds, we'll open fire!’ “Strong words, huh? You're a tough guy, Commander Baldwyn... in that case... we'll 'free' him right now!” (The vampires murder their captive.) “Fire!!” “No! None of them are falling!” “Are you convinced now, Detective Perez? Give me a hand lighting the Molotovs. Here's a nice burning cocktail from Papa Kurjak!” “Do as he does! Throw the Molotovs!” “Go to hell, bastards!” “Well done, Perez! Like that!” (A defender is shot in the head and drops his Molotov indoors) "Oh, crap!" (Kurjak swats it out the window, where it explodes on the chest of a vampire climbing in.) “Give me that pike!” “Here it is!” “Die, bloodsucker!” (Kurjak impales the burning vampire.) “Marchesi!” “The pike! Get the other stake!” Social/Sharing |

The fire effects are fantastic, and the closing panel is so brutal it would be very much at home in 2000AD (like Ezquerra's Fiends of the Eastern Front). Great, moody page that has quite a non-gothic take on vampires.

I might have to start calling him Don Dotti soon (sorry, inside joke. will explain another time). Chiming in later than my usual here but it's my birthday, decent excuse. Was gonna skip commenting entirely today but they say you should be doing things you enjoy doing on your birthday...looking at banger Dampyr artwork qualifies! :)
