DescriptionFrom a nostalgic point of view, this is one of the most important piece I've posted on CAF to date. GI Joe #21 was the 1st comic I ever read. I quickly got a subscription to it, but it took me a year to realize there were actual comic book stores! Armed with months of allowance (about $10 mind you), I went to my LCS & asked to see back issues. GI Joe was crazy hot, so the prices were really high, especially for a broke kid. I could not afford #1 or #2, but I was able to snag a #3 & #5. GI Joe #1-20 is my personal Golden Age. It's the 1st comic I read, 1st title I got a subscription to, and the 1st series I collected back issues. If not for GI Joe, who knows where I would be, what I would be doing & what I might be collecting.I had a chance to buy this in 2005 & let it slip by. I was not going to make that mistake a second time! Social/Sharing |

A classic cover! So great to know it landed with you, West, especially given your childhood backstory connection to this series. Great stuff, congrats!

Oh man, this is awesome. G.I. Joe, for about 3 years in the 80s, was my most anticipated monthly comic read. Great stuff!

wonderful stuff! i discovered the gi joe comic a little later but hit the same money problems when looking for back issues. i remember saving for issue 7 and the hard to find issue 23. i loved the action and colors of this 5 cover. i also had the M.O.B.A.T. and played this scenario out a time or two im sure. great to see it here. CONGRATS!

That's da bamn! (So sorry, I couldn't control myself. It slipped out) I love GI Joe, too. Guns, tanks, and sweet costumes and code names. And intersecting nostalgia with a cool cover can't be beat. That's half the battle right there. Big congrats!

Great collector's story! I love coming onto CAF to read the personal reflections on the hobby, and the "personal Golden Age" idea is something that we must all feel at some level. Congrats on picking up that great cover!

WOW, unbelievable cover! Brings back such great memories - I remember referencing that closest cobra to make a paper-mache Cobra Trooper mask as a kid.

Wow! Amazingly early GI Joe cover! What a stunning drawing from Bob Hall and Frank Giacoia. Tanks and soldiers battling it out in Central Park! What more could any GI Joe fan ask for? Love Hall's drawing of the tank plowing through the park's pond, firing its cannon at the retreating Cobra Troopers! Lush inks by Frank Giacoia really make the scene pop off the cover! Fantastic to see early GI Joe covers turning up in collectors' galleries! Fabulous pick-up, congrats!
