DescriptionFrom a nostalgic point of view, this is the most important piece I've posted on CAF to date. GI Joe #21 was the 1st comic I ever read. I quickly got a subscription to it, but it took me a year to realize there were actual comic book stores! Armed with months of allowance (about $10 mind you), I went to my LCS & asked to see back issues. GI Joe was crazy hot, so the prices were really high, especially for a broke kid. I could not afford #1 or #2, but I was able to snag a #3 & #5. GI Joe #1-20 is my personal Golden Age. It's the 1st comic I read, 1st title I got a subscription to, and the 1st series I collected back issues. If not for GI Joe, who knows where I would be, what I would be doing & what I might be collecting. With G.I. Joe #3 being their 3rd appearance, Marvel did not let us down! I love this classic robot cover. It only takes a few years for G.I. Joe to fight other giant robots… ie. Transformers! I had the chance to buy this in 2005 & regretfully I let it slip by. I was not going to make that mistake a second time! Social/Sharing |

Congratulations, West, I've always loved this cover for the giant robot, too! Aside from the first issue, it's probably my favourite of the first 10 covers.

An amazing time period of daily cartoons, toys, and comics! GI Joe was everywhere during this time to fill a boy's day! These foundational issues by Hama set the bar of an unmatched continuity from issue to issue.

Fantastic GI Joe cover. I was watching this one and almost went for it. Glad you got it instead. This is such a great early GI Joe cover! As you point out, it's got the Joes fighting robots even before Transformers! Bob Hall did an excellent job of laying this cover out. The massive robot in the background, looming over the Joes really keeps the cover intereting. Love the way the soldier in the foreground is getting zapped by the robot's laser. And Al Milgrom's inks do a great job of making the scene more dramatic. I love the backlighting on the robot and on the soldier. Hall and Milgrom did a first rate job of bringing this scene to life! Great pick-up, congrats!

I saw this on a dealer wall probably 12 or so years ago. Out of my price range even then lol. Such a dynamic and momorable cover with a wonderful layout. Great pick-up!
