DescriptionA beautiful (IMHO) example of the Flash Gordon strip by Alex Raymond. Flash Gordon was created by Raymond and began in January 7, 1934. I think many of us take Flash Gordon and it's impact on Science Fiction for granted. Raymond, considered by many as one of the best illustrators of all time can also be thought of (because of Flash) as one of the fathers of SciFi.I was lucky enough to grab this piece with the matching Jungle Jim "topper." Jungle Jim was a entirely separate strip created to compete with Tarzan, and printed above Flash Gordon in the Sunday comics (the being called a topper). Raymond's use of inks to convey light, shadow and tone are evident here. The facial expressiveness he was able to evoke in his strips is unmatched today. In the early years of the strip he used a dry brush technique in inking much like the pulp illustrators of the time, in the second half of the 30's his style changed to a heavier line, more sharp and (I believe) allowing more expression in his characters. His later work (after he returned from WWII) in Rip Kirby provides a good example of the evolution of his talent. Social/Sharing |

A beautiful strip that captures Raymond's signature style. Gorgeous feathering, expressive characters, and a sense of movement that is unparalleled and often characteristic of his work. Congrats, Ron!

A wonderfully fluid and expressive work by this founding master of the art form, and an influence for so many who followed. A superb example Ron!

WOW...big congratulations Ron! Raymond’s delicate, feathery inking during this era is a sight to behold. I'll never tire looking at these early Flash Gordon strips...simply stunning!

Amazing how quickly Raymond developed as an artist. The fine lines in this Sunday are off set by the darker cave lines. Congrats!

Another Christmas Eve strip! Raymond's imagination and the way he went about presenting through those ink brushes were the benchmark of excellence others compared themselves to.

Those Raymond Flash Gordon strips are masterpieces! It's sad how the comic strip has devolved over the years, but at least we have beautiful art like this to look back on. Congrats!

Incredible Flash Gordon page by the great Alex Raymond. This Science Fiction comic strip was incredibly popular during the 1930s. Back before television, comic strips were one of the most popular forms of public entertainment. And Flash Gordon's success in the comics led to both a radio show and a movie serial that only increased the strip's success. Today, of course, Flash Gordon retains its popularity among collectors mostly because of the quality of Alex Raymond's art. And this is a fantastic example of that. Great pick-up, congrats!
