Description"Guadalcanal" by Paul S. Newman. April-June 1964.The Marines secure the airfield but run into a Japanese machine gun. Sam probably wrote "m.g. (sic machine gun) burst on the ground" in the margin to guide the colorist with the last panel. I like the panel's foreground boot that enhances the sense of depth and action. Historical note: They named the airfield after Marine Major Lofton Henderson, the first Marine aviator killed in action during the Battle of Midway, according to Wikipedia. Social/Sharing |

Defending a position is often tougher than mounting an attack. The jungle action is just heating up with gunfire!

I like the mention of how sounds like brustling bushes or birds wailing could trigger a heightened awareness or move for their guns as soldiers are on edge all the time in the fog of war.

Yes, that's definitely Sam who wrote "M.G. burst on ground" on the bottom border to ensure the coloris didn't confuse the bursts for tall grass! The foreground boot adds great effect indeed.

I like the top panel. With the marines warily walking unto the base.
Even with the directions, the colorist did a minimal job on that last panel.

Thanks, Miki! Yes, the colorist didn't follow his instructions very well for the last panel and just colored the jungle in a solid green. Can hardly tell those are machine gun bursts.
