DescriptionGiffen's birthday was only a couple of days ago, November 30th. Lets call this a birthday celebration. From 1978, comes this action packed title page splash from the final issue of Claw the Unconquered. Claw the Unconquered was a DC Comics title that debuted in 1975. Claw the Unconquered was a Conan-like character with art supplied by Ernie Chan for the first seven issues. Issue 8–12 were pencilled by Keith Giffen. The book was cancelled after issue 12 as part of the DC Implosion. I'm not familiar with the character but it's an epic splash. As good as any barbarian splash as you can get. Tons of action with beasts and monsters and even though it's early in his career it still has that Giffen style. Claw the Unconquered #12 pg 1 "The Slayer" by artits Keith Giffen and Bob Layton. On a 11X17 board. 1978 Social/Sharing |

I'm seeing like around 40% Giffen and 60% Layton, which is good because both ofthem were early in their careers at this point. Definitely an epics Conan spla...uh, Claw splash!

It is nice to see the horse take time from his crazy punk rock tour to head into battle.

It's great barbarian fantasy artwork. DC's own version of sword and sorcery and they were bringing everything Marvel was doing for Conan.

Claw was a great, and well-drawn, title. It was a shame that it folded so quickly. This is a stunning battle scene, with Giffen pulling out all the stops - and really channelling Buscema for this ambitious angle and pile-on composition. A really lovely splash.
