Description

I was in college when I bought the Ace Paperback edition of Richard Lupoff's Edgar Rice Burroughs: Master of Adventure. In that book were several illustrations by several well-known artists including this one. Even with a grainy 5 x 7" reproduction in a paperback, I could see that the drawing was stunning.

Then, like everything, it came up for auction and again it was from old friend Roger Hill's collection. While Crandall may have laid the drawing out, this shows a lot of Williamson as Carson Napier fights off the vicious Klangen.

Those Ace editions were a gold mine for covers and illustrations.  This is a good as anything from EC.  It truly captures Burroughs' vision.  Great teamup of artists. Congrats!

I bought this from Caz back in 1979. I sold it to Tony Dispoto in 1981. Tony, at some point must have sold this to Roger.
GREAT ILLUSTRATION!

Thanks, Mitch.  Always good to hear where things come from.  I am guessing that this was done when Crandall lived with Williamson in the 60s.

Imaginative adventure illustration with the eye descending along with the twisted tree until we find our hero fighting off his persuers.  Images like this inspired a whole generation of creative types!

Good point, Jon.  Crandall had a hard time finding work in the 60s and AL told Reed he could stay with him in PA.  Al was a truly human human being.  You might recall that Al recommended Reed to do Flash Gordon after he became committed to Secret Agent.  I do believe that this was done while they were living together.

This is truly stunning and GREAT...as I understand it, Williamson was always willing to help others (e.g. Crandall, Evans, etc)...anyone would love to have a friend like him, but few really do in this world.  His acts of kindness and humanity both known and unknown speak to his character as a person...its those acts that matter so much in life...

Wally - I believe that Al Williamson laid out the drawing, and that Crandall added some finishes.  Gray Morrow did a painting of the same layout which was credited to Williamson and Morrow with no mention of Crandall.
