Description

The pulp illustrators of the Great Depression were geniuses of economy, even with their art supplies. When they could not afford illustration or coquille board, they looked around their tenement studios and apartments for other surfaces to pain and draw on.

The oil painters discovered plywood and masonite, while the ink artists found the solution in linoleum window shades, which could be purchased in multi-yard roles for a dime, or, for the really enterprising, lifted from the windows of the nearest cheap hotel - or their own apartments.

The linoleum texture proved perfect for drybrush ink, and even ink could be erased, scraped, or other wise lifted for changes and corrections.
