DescriptionIn 1907, Author Maurice Leblanc released the first collection of stories recounting the adventures of Arsene Lupin, a charming thief and master of disguises. The character became quite popular, featured in 17 novels and 39 novellas, inspiring generations of charming anti-heroes to follow. In 2022, a brand new edition of the first Arsene Lupin novel released, beautifully illustrated by artist Vincent Mallie, capturing the joyful style of an animated feature, collecting the first 9 novellas features dozens of black-and-white and full-color illustrations and plates. I bought the book in our local bookstore last year, been immediately fascinated by the cover art the first time I saw it, even though I did not know who the artist was. Last month I unintentionally came across this piece at an exhibition held by a Daniel Maghen Gallery. Perhaps a coincidence but I knew I want it :) The art was done by pen, ink and watercolor on paper. Social/Sharing |

Beautiful piece! All of the art in the book is great but you probably got the best one.

It speaks to you right away with the mysterious figure cloaked in shadow with the old world streets brightly golden behind him. The gradual turn to the darkness in the foreground is handled with care like all the illustrative lines.

There's something very charming about this illustration. The delicacy of the linework provides just enough information to give the viewer a sense of place and allows the mind to fill in the gaps.
