DescriptionI wrote to Paul Coker at the beginning of this year, back in February (2010), inquiring about the possibility of a commission. Mr. Coker wrote back right away, telling me that yes, it would be possible. I wrote him back right away, mentioning an idea I had, which included my suggestion of a self-portrait at the drawing board, with some of his characters. As examples, I suggested the possible appearance of Frosty the Snowman, one of his Horrifying Cliches monsters, and the ever lovin' chicken from the Manual on Chicken Sex, which Coker was caught perusing on the MAD excursion to Copenhagen. After that I heard..........nothing.....nada.....zilch. A few months passed, and I assumed that Mr. Coker was no longer interested, especially since we hadn't discussed any specifics, outside of what I had written him in my last letter. Fast forward to today, October 22, 2010. I received an unexpected package in the mail from Mr. Coker, which contained this fantastic self-caricature! What a complete and joyous surprise it was to open the package and discover what it contained! Even into his 80s, Paul Coker has not lost a step in his drawing. The line work is as sharp and calligraphic as ever, and I love, love, love his slap-dash approach to watercolor. I could not be happier with this piece. A big tip of the Hatlo hat goes out to Sir Gary Land, for hooking me up with Mr. Coker. Thanks Gary! Social/Sharing |

Well, as Frosty would say, "Happy birthday!"

Very very cool, Rob. I've never seen a color piece by Mr Coker, so it's all the more special. Love his Mad work.

Paul Coker is one of my very favorite cartoonists. I love looking for his drawings on portraits in the holiday videos and and distinct that little wiggle in his pen line is wonderful!
