Description

This original issue of LIFE Magazine (Vol. 15, No. 6, August 9, 1943) contains the published Description: This vintage August 9, 1943 issue of LIFE magazine features the published In the Service Fisk Tires advertisement, based on Phillip Dormont’s wartime concept art, prominently displayed on the lower half of the right-hand page within the interior. The illustrated ad depicts a U.S. infantryman surging from the surf with Thompson submachine gun in hand, accompanied by Fisk Tires’ iconic “Fisk Boy” mascot. Produced during the height of WWII, the ad formed part of U.S. Rubber Co.’s morale-boosting In the Service campaign.

The original Dormont illustration, created in pencil and ink wash on board, is held separately in this gallery under its own listing, complete with provenance, campaign production materials, and historical background. This magazine example provides important publication context, showing the artwork as it was seen by readers in 1943.
