Description

On November 5, 1975, New York City was on the brink of financial collapse due to mounting debt and a lack of federal assistance. The crisis stemmed from years of deficit spending, declining tax revenues, and banks refusing to extend further credit to the city.

The situation escalated when President Gerald Ford initially refused to bail out the city, famously leading to the New York Daily News headline: "Ford to City: Drop Dead." However, after intense negotiations, Governor Hugh Carey and financial leaders secured emergency funding through the Municipal Assistance Corporation (MAC), preventing an official default.

The crisis marked a turning point in urban fiscal policy, leading to austerity measures, budget cuts, and increased financial oversight.
