Description

"Battle of Midway, Chapter 13" written and lettered probably by Alcala.

I have not found a physical or electronic copy of this issue. Publication date, however, is likely December 1963 or January 1964, based on the date of the preceding issue. My thanks to fellow collector Lee Harmon for a scan of the Midway cover of Redondo Komix 17, publication date December 17, 1963, with which I could estimate the date of publication of this page.

Alcala, Nestor Redondo, and other Filipino artists started CRAF following the demise of Ace Publications in the Philippines. It operated between 1963 until at least 1968.

Postscript 6/12/2025: I've been able to confirm that the publication date is December 31, 1963 and that Alcala wrote and lettered the story, thanks to a Filipino comics collector and seller in Singapore. I've updated the credits below to identify Alcala as the letterer. However, I didn't edit the description above to highlight the challenge of finding a physical or electronic copy of Redondo Komix.

Postscript later in the day: I uploaded photos of the published page and cover courtesy of the collector in Singapore. The red and flesh tone colors are quite effective, and it's nice to see the title and credits, which aren't on the original art.

Translation of page's Tagalog/Filipino text:

"Chapter 31

The Past: The carrier Yorktown was damaged by bombs, forcing Admiral Fletcher to transfer to the cruiser Astoria. Soon after, Japanese planes attacked again, and Yorktown was hit by two torpedoes, while the carrier Hiryu was also attacked by the Americans and burned...

(Now:) Before midnight, while the Japanese were desperately trying to suppress the raging fire of the Hiryu, another fire broke out from the other side of the ship...

During the nine-hour battle, the Japanese had already lost more than four hundred people..."

Thank you! It's nice to have pages about the battle from a Filipino as well as American comic.

Outstanding artistry! In terms of pure, illustrative ability, this is so far ahead of what everyone drawing for American comics were doing at that time. Only a few newspaper strip artists were on the same or higher level.

Closest one is 95 miles away! How about chicken teriyaki or some ramen?

Alcala draws this with seriousness of real life history.  They are more sensational images than what would be put into history books, yet show the human struggle and desperation as the intent is to be anti-war.
