Death & Dream

Not For Sale

Death and Dream from the pages of Neil Gaiman's Sandman by Brazilian artist Eric Diniz. This was the basis for a limited-edition print. I found this on eBay quickly snatched it up and it arrived well-packed from Santa Isabel in eleven days. Death of the Endless is one of my favorite characters of modern fiction and I'm interested in how different artists interpret her.

Eric's version bears an uncanny resemblance to Brazilian Pop-Punk singer Karen Dió (if you are unfamiliar I highly endorse seeking out her track, "Sick Ride" on Youtube or Spotify). His rendition of Dream is almost feline and manga-esque and suggests Jill Thompson's highly stylized At Death's Door as a possible influence. And while the composition infers something more than siblinghood, there's still somehow an innocence to it that harkens back through centuries of devotional art, invoking in particular the pre-Raphaelites whose images of Madonna and Christ are likewise infused with an air of romance.

You can't see it very well it in the scan but there is an ever-so-slight indication that Eric had initially drawn a zori strap, as though Death were wearing Japanese sandals, but thought better to remove it. Such secrets revealed on the original artwork are among the greatest ancillary treasures in this hobby.

Gorgeous manga infused/influenced Death & Dream piece for sure! Conceptually it does come off as a bit unexpectedly provacative for a piece between siblings but it does also feel rooted in classic imagery. Nice Ebay find!

Love Dream's eyes here and can't miss the fun toes art!

In the color print (which I've also now added), the pink added as a highlight to her toes in combination with the grey-blue of their overall skin tones lends a Krishna-esque aspect to it all.

Matthew the Raven is also somewhat more visible in the colorized version.

Love that light watercolor used for the flowers and the moon giving nature an important say in the themes presented by Death and Morpheus.

I really like it, especially how he handled Dream's hair! But, I have to admit, I'm a little bit disturbed by the fact that Death appears to be in the 13 to 16 year old range, with both of them being in the buff and all.

I'm not seeing that age range at all —especially not in the face. If Karen Dió actually was the model for this drawing of Death she would have been 33 at the time this was drawn, albeit looking perhaps a decade younger than that.

Not currently knowing any female with a similar hairstyle, that's just how it first looked to me. Having looked at the Sick Ride video by  Karen Dió now, however, I can see how this could also come off as someone in their early 20's of the hairstyle immediately made you think of a young adult with a similar style. Either way, I still like it.
