DescriptionDeath to FablesTribute to the cover of Fables no. 33 by Justine Frany Ink, watercolor, graphite on illustration board 9 x 12 in. Not For Sale During the November 2024 Comic Art Live virtual CAF-con, NextArt hosted a live sale that introduced me to the work of Justine Frany. I saw in the work presented a James Jean color palette that immediately sparked a commission idea: a Death tribute to Fables that combined my two favorite Vertigo heroines, she of the Endless and Snow White. I provided the cover to Fables no. 33 and requested that Frany flip it to better feature Death's signature eyeliner on the correct side of her face. It was completed in time for SDCC and once again I was able to rely upon Vegas neighbors to mule it back for me. Thanks to Daryl and Jeff for that! Justine went beyond a simple flip to decorate the border with tiny skulls and make it much more unique while still nailing the assignment. Jiggy offered to buy it himself if I wasn't happy with it - but seriously, who wouldn't be happy with this? I'm lovin' it! #endless #sandman #death #snowwhite #fables #dcvertigo #mashup #comicart #OAX #SDCC #comicartlive Social/Sharing |

You're loving it? And I'm the one who came home from McDonald's a couple of hours ago. Really, really lovely piece. The skull and flower adornments and dove filled background are actually my favourite parts. Not to mention the color scheme, which is beautiful.

The limited color palette is so well utilized by Frany from sharp to soft bringing the fairy tale look. Grimm or Disney, the type of storybook ending is left open to the audience.

Beautiful piece by Justine. The skulls, ravens, and flower accents are awesome, and the Death figure is lovely. As others have said the limited color pallette is just right. congrats on the result!

Never would have thought to commission Frany to homage a James Jean cover, but it works beautifully. Her style works really well with the dreamlike quality of the original cover, and it's also able to stand on its own merit even without the homage. Congrats!
