DescriptionDeath Waits Endless Ashoreby Celso Mazine ink on illustration board 11 x 17 in. Not for Sale Celso Mazine is an illustrator from Brazil who was recommended by fellow CAF pal, Mikhail in the Comic Art Live chat during a live appearance. In the course of booking a Death of the Endless commission —for which many layout comps were provided, I found myself drawn to more than one concept and booked two commissions, but he graciously added a third as a gift. Each will get its own post. The fashion here was inspired by film stills of Mia Wasikowska as Madame Bovary, with Gothic elements from Stoker and Jane Eyre filling out the landscape along with my request for a either a crow or a cat (or both). The lighthouse brings me back to the Cape Ann Light Station of my youth, and summers spent boating and deep-sea fishing along the coasts of New England and New Foundland. There is also an inherent callback to the gothic romance paperbacks of the 1960s and 70s that lined the spinning, wire racks of the Derby Square Bookstore. Nostalgia is quite a potent drug, isn't it? Should pale death, with treble dread, make the ocean caves our bed, God who hears the surges roll deign to save the suppliant soul.

I love the full background. This is the type of commission I much prefer, as it feels like it's telling a story.
