DescriptionA Tempest to which Death Stands WitnessBy Celso Mazine Ink on illustration board 17 x 11 in. Not for Sale This is the second of two commissions by @celsomazine featuring Death of the Endless. The model for this piece was Meiko Kaji during her Toei Films heyday as Sasori: Female Prisoner Scorpion; her iconic hat lost to a gale that has also seemingly claimed many umbrellas. The perspective from beneath the water's surface and under the rowboat that holds her aloft is at once jarring and serene. The umbrellas float swanlike on the water's surface — beacons perhaps. While Death's presence here infers tragedy, there is always the chance that this is a near-death experience; a fleeting glimpse beyond the pale. But if the viewer's fate has indeed been sealed there is great comfort to be had in being ushered to that next place by such a beautiful and compassionate companion. As above, so below. The camera is right beneath the water's surface, SO AWESOME! I love the upside down umbrellas acting as a framing device for Death and the primary umbrella, too. Pick of the week!

Celso envisioned the ownerless umbrellas representing souls carried by currents and winds, so it was great to see how much thought went into it.

Every time it rains, it rains fairies from Gaiman
Don't you know Death's proud contains Mazine from heaven?
You'll find your fortune's fallin' all over and drown
Be sure that your umbrella is upside down
Trade them for a package of sunshine through water
If you want the things you love, tempest of powers
So, when you tear the corners, don't run under Mazine
Death'll be carried to heaven with you and me

Perhaps with so many umbrellas depicted on the water above as the beacons, Death is looking at multiple victims of a boating accident or shipwreck. I like how it is left to the interpretation of the viewer though, generally speaking. Another nice piece from the artist in the set of 3, with this one being the most ambigiuous to some degree.

That reminds me of a quote from author James Hollis: "Learning to live with ambiguity is learning to live with how life really is full of complexities and surprises."
Life is full of ambiguity; death generally less so —but ambiguity in death is the start of almost every great mystery.
