Description#OAX2024 pick upOh man, oh man! This is a big one! This is the page where Excalibur is first introduced as a team to the world! This issue's adventure vs. Technet and the Warwolves was the catalyst that brought these individuals together. Survival and the recent trauma each character was going through, plus Xavier's dream, created a group bond that would survive for decades to come. There are so many things I love about this twice-up masterpiece. I see hope, family, excitement, innocence, and adventure. Alan and Paul's art speaks for itself. Beauty, emotion, history, and presence are all wrapped up into one! OK, enough gushing. Special thank you to the collector/friend who agreed to the trade. It will always be appreciated! *article on Paul's recent passing. RIP, Mr. Neary https://bleedingcool.com/comics/paul-neary-british-comics-legend-dies-at-74-rip/?fbclid=IwAR3sp3_CZlbzFa3L-l-7BzO8IjizF6xo3748_Gtl9sE-l4fKztcBSvY9-pA#google_vignette Social/Sharing |

It ain't Rek-Rap, but it ain't bad. Haha! Just kidding. EXTRAORDINARY pick-up!! Historically significant yes, but also so beautifully drawn! I know how thrilled you are to acquire this one, and that is what this hobby is all about. O-A-X-CITING!

The X-Event of the late 80's! Holds a special place for collectors of that time because of the subsequent success of the team through the years! Davis and Neary at their sharpest!
Q&A: Did the trade involve arm wrestling and your stash of body builder magazines?

Alas I no longer own any vintage muscle mags, but sacrifices had to be made!

I feel like in our hobby, the word "historic" gets thrown away too quickly (whenever Aunt May changes dresses for example ^^) but this certainly qualifies where super heroes comics are concerned.
And if the naysayers could argue that the team is formed earlier in the book, I think anyone having read it remembers that gorgeous splash.

Gorgeous art, Davis' run on Excalibur (especially the first one with Neary's inks) will never receive enough praise. This splash is huge, in all senses!

James, I have -always- considered your collection to be next level, but THIS?!? Holy moley... This is something that breaks through into the stratosphere (like the Phoenix Force itself)! No better way to put it than to say that, with laughter and transcendent joy, the dream of epic, classic original art is reconsecrated. (That just popped into my head, right now!) An incredible chunk of X-history, gorgeously drawn by Alan and Paul. OAX-sized congrats, James!!

The best page of the entire Excalibur series. Better than all the covers, better than any splash. If I had to have only one Excalibur page it would be this one. A marvel

I still need to read this run, but an Alan Davis splash page of the Excalibur team is still pretty stellar on its own (it's on my wishlist, and I haven't even read the books). Huge congrats on the pickup!

Was going to hold out to be the 100th comment, but what the hell. Congrats on this killer Alan Davis piece. Alan's work on these team books were just the best.

Wow, what an incredible piece of Davis Excalibur art to acquire. Congrats, man, you're gonna have to find some pretty heavy duty X-Men pieces to top this one, so it may all be downhill for the rest of 2024. You may have peaked really early this year, but I won't bet against you!

"69, dudes!!" Thought of that Bill and Ted line as I'm comment 69 here.
I'm behind on commenting and this one's at the top of the list. Whew. What can I say that others have not. Christening of the new team, all characters I think of then I think "Alan Davis", all full figure big and bold AND smiling, "EXCALIBUR" also big and bold, THE start to renowned run for many of us...I guess I'll stop this run-on sentence here.
SINCERE congrats, brother!

The cover of this issue is a near perfect battle splash, but THIS image looks more like an Omnibus cover than an interior page. I have a deep appreciation of how Alan and Paul instill their illustrations with personality to the degree that facial expression and body language convey relationship, familiarity and personal regard. I remember reading this at the shop I worked and enjoying this page. Great piece.
