Description

Matted, hand-illustrated and painted artwork of the location of the celebrated Yoda (Frank Oz) fight scene from George Lucas' Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, as drawn and painted by artist John R. Mullaney. This lot comes directly from the renowned cutaways artist and technical illustrator.

This unique artwork was commissioned and published by Lucasfilm and Dorling Kindersley for the book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones in 2003. It depicts the precise moment in the prequel when Yoda levitates a severed column away from crushing Anakin and Obi-Wan, as Count Dooku makes his escape and Padme and clone troopers arrive in the gunship. In addition to being asked to depict the spaces seen in the sequence, the artist was also asked to show a Geonosian Craft's docking station and a reactor complex.

The artwork's content and development was supervised and approved by the Head of Lucasfilm's art department Doug Chiang in conjunction with the studio and publisher's licensing team. The original artwork is notable for its heavier use of gouache than that seen in Mullaney's other work. Since its initial publication in 2003, the artwork has appeared in every updated edition of DK's Star Wars Complete Locations title including the most recent in 2025, though the large format versions of the original titles are no longer in print. Due to the nature of studio-licensed publishing protocols, this artwork cannot be reproduced for sale as a print, heightening the rarity of the original art.

The artwork is rendered in pencil, watercolor, ink and gouache on 300gsm watercolor paper, which is also framed with a card. Mullaney has signed the artwork. Dimensions: 18" x 16" (46 cm x 41 cm)
