Description

In 2019, Topps released a series of cards featuring art from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Some of these cards displayed existing covers from TMNT titles, some were blank cards that were sketched on by comic artists, and some featured artwork created just for this line. This piece is among the latter.

Steve Lavigne did the pencils for this and had Ryan Brown lay down the inks. It then came back to Steve for colors. Steve told me that the blue monster's right hand wasn't part of the original pencils to get inked. He added it himself after the fact because his mental image of the monster's full pose (without the right hand) just seemed too comical. I like the change since now it looks like the monster is getting blasted square in the chest.

If you didn't know, this piece is inspired by the story in the original Donatello one-shot where Donatello and Kirby travel briefly to "Kirby World" where they encounter all kinds of strange creatures. The whole world is a clear homage to Jack Kirby and his influence on the creation of the TMNT. This piece really captures that Kirby essence. It's even got a little "Kirby Krackle" in the back thrown in for good measure.

Donatello is my favorite turtle, I love when he uses the gravity gauntlet, the Donatello one-shot is one of my absolute favorite TMNT stories, and Steve's colors on this are absolutely brilliant. This piece speaks to me.

It was a great one shot that Eastman and Laird showed how much they were influenced by Kirby in the creation of the Turtles. This Lavigne and Brown card celebrates it even further with not only the line style, but also design and colors that mimic a lot of Kirby Fourth World!
