DescriptionShe Shows Up Every Halloween, New Yorker cartoon, October 30, 1937Ink and wash on paper 14 x 16-7/8 inches (35.6 x 42.9 cm) Signed lower right: Chas Addams The Irvin Greif Collection of New Yorker Art Only Charles Addams's second Halloween-themed cartoon to appear in The New Yorker, this work is one of the rare group of early published pieces that show the development of his now-classic Addams Family sensibility. The gag, captioned "She shows up every Halloween", shows a black-hatted witch with a shock of white hair mixing a cauldron in a fine dining kitchen, surrounded by a sophisticated, bemused staff. It's a significant offering by the legendary cartoonist, who would go on to develop this archetype into the Addams Family's own Granny Frump as well as the subject of many of his beloved and highly-anticipated spooky season cartoons and covers for The New Yorker.
