DescriptionSharks!Because they were the incentive to buy that page which popped up at auction and which I remembered well from reading it and making me smile. The first panel half-splash is well staged with Manphibian (…I had to look him up) explaining to Spidey-Pool that these are actually intelligent telepathic sharks. Spidey looks amusingly afraid and Deadpool is missing a limb as usual. What I love here is that even though we don’t see any of the sharks in full, Bachalo managed to give us a sense they are swimming exactly like sharks do, circling their preys. I also like how the sharks are covered by scars and how the tech burrows into their skin which is rendered very much in a Micronauts by Golden way, one of Chris’ top influences. In panel two, we get the Deadpool I don’t like, the constant joker never taking things seriously while getting maimed. Ah ah. And yet I confess that the way Bachalo drew the slit of his eyes works well visually to convey the “humorous” vibe of that scene, even without any word. Great cartooning. Third panel is also fun because we see the sharks looking at their preys escaping them. The best detail for me is the creepy way Spidey is swimming away. He looks like a creepy spider doing so and yet ridiculously out of his element. The fourth sees Manphibian giving Bruce and Deborah, the sharks, the evening free to swim, like you would kids at school. Fun. The fact that you see him exciting the panel in another direction to Spidey-Pool in the previous one is a fun way to underline that there is no “proper” direction under water. In the fifth panel, Bruce says to Deborah that soon, they will consume them all, which brought a smile to my face. Intelligent and telepathic they may be but they remain sharks and sharks like their food. In the final panel, they swim away, to the right to prompt the reader to turn the page, to go and legally download the new episode of Stranger Things at Deborah’s suggestion. Bruce did not know that the new season was out and hope that Eleven is ok. What fun :) Completely contemporaneous with its publishing era, for sure completely out of date 5 years from now and a reference that our (grand) children will not get but it made me smile. I’m usually extremely difficult to amuse as regards works of fiction, especially with this kind of silly, nonsensical, on the nose geeky self-referencing stuff. And yet here I was, proof that to every rule, there are exceptions. Great fun art by Bachalo/Townsend and fun writing by Robbie Thompson. Social/Sharing |

Let me get this out of the way first: This page does indeed provide some good, silly fun! I'm getting a feeling of deja vu though, because I know I've seen this page before. Did you once have it in your gallery, or did you possibly show it to me privately? Anyway, sharks!

Nice crossover! It tkaes a lot to upstage Deadpool and Spidey, but they did it. These disparate characters are united by Bachalo and Townsend artwork!

This all works so well, thematically. I mean, come on - what kind of pool is it when the sharks take over? A dead pool, of course. Chris's masterful use of the panel space he is given here really makes this page sing, as everything fits, but feels -very- clausrophobic at the same time. Big honkin' sharks'll do that to a space, I suppose. Lovely, lovely cartooning, just as you say. Great pick up, Fred - congrats!

Spidey: "Sure. Why not." Lol! And DP not even impressed by these sharks! Fun page from the dynamic duo of Bachalo and Townsend. Congrats!
