DescriptionIncredible to think that Geoff Johns's exceptional run on GL ended more than 10 years ago now (along with Peter Tomasi whose writing I actually favor over Johns'). For me it remains the best & most quality consistent modern run produced by DC Comics. Not only did it modernize the character and its lore for a modern audience, it truly expanded on it.Here we have a super impressive splash of Hal Jordan kicking Black Hand’s ass (in Indigo tribe mode, hence his staff) after having syphoned power out of him to recharge his ring. That’s quite the heroic splash if there is any, with Hal in all his glory. I like that Mahnke drew him with one leg far behind him as it’s been an artistic mainstay of the character when depicted flying (Gil Kane, Neal Adams or Joe Staton come to mind). The bold figure of Black Hand being ejected towards the reader gives a great immersive 3D feel to the page. Mahnke also did a nice job at framing the centre figure of Hal with the background elements and the indigo staff so that the reader’s eye is immediately drawn to it. All of the radiating energies, emanating from both figures really add to the sense of power of the scene. You feel like the ring is 100% charged here. Lastly, Mahnke’s figure work is always super dynamic, strong and impressive. I will also comment of the perfection of the inks. For reasons that have never been clear to me (deadlines, chosen and systemic method,...), Doug Mahnke's art has always been inked by a battery of inkers on many of his jobs, inside single issues. While many of those are seasoned inkers (Irwin, Champagne, Doug himself or Mendoza), I have always found that Christian Alamy was his very best one, adding much depth to his art. I’ve got a great Sinestro splash from the same creative team (visible in this very gallery) so when I saw this one and managed to buy it, I felt I had completed a great set of examples from that fantastic run. This is part 3 of my 2025 CAF birthday party, incidentally also my 20th year on CAF. Social/Sharing |

Nice splash. Really well done. Love the strong, clean, inking.

Great image of GL! It's an iconic pose that's compact enough to resemble the cornerboxes of old.

Happy birthday pt 3! Nice splash! I enjoyed Mahnke's work on the Batman Under The Red Hood run quite a bit, and this is a great GL image!

Such a great classic pose and dispatching a second rate silver age villain who became a massive modern threat. Encapsulates an era in that image. Congratulations

Nice! This is a superb splash page with great content by a great art team. As you say, Alamy was always a great inker over Mahnke. They were possibly my favourite art team on Green Lantern during the Geoff Johns run. Great stuff!

Love it! I was reading GL furiously during this time and a lot of that had to do with Mahnke's art! Love this full splash shot of Hal takin' it to Black Hand, who got a big power upgrade in the run. Congrats!
