Description

Jones created these sculptures in 1970, using Vatican Stone as the medium. After casting they were finished by hand, and then signed on a flat spot in the base. Approximately 75 of them were created, although there are numerous instances where they were damaged in shipping or other ways, so they are becoming difficult to find in an undamaged state. The Vatican Stone version (this version) was the second edition, the first having been approximately 10 that were cast in plaster. When I found this one, I was fortunate to receive the box in which Jones originally packaged it (see the second photo). These boxes were one of the first instances of Jones's colophon (the J in a box), and Jones drew the colophon and signed them by hand on two sides of the box with a flair marker. The boxes were only included with the 75 that were cast in 1970.

A second commercial casting was done in 1976, of approximately 100. The second casting can be distinguished from the first by the lack of a signature and the copyright date on the back of the base. When considering all of the castings, a total of approximately 185 statues were created.

This is my favorite sculpture of all time, and inspired me to become a sculptor. You are very lucky to have one.
