DescriptionA historic original by Mike Mignola, showcasing the sovereign of Atlantis himself — Namor the Sub-Mariner, also affectionately known as Subby. This title splash page from Marvel Fanfare #16 (1984) is of particular significance: it marks the very first time Mignola illustrated Namor for Marvel, in the short story “A Fable” written by Bill Mantlo. As the opening to that tale, it carries exceptional weight — the genesis of Mignola’s artistic journey with one of Marvel’s oldest and most complex heroes. Every line here radiates mastery: the bold composition, the commanding inks, the powerful title work — all uniting to honor the majesty of the Sub-Mariner. Mignola’s style, already distinctive and maturing toward its legendary form, makes this piece a landmark in comic book history. In my eyes, this is Mignola at the height of his early brilliance — a piece that captures both the timeless allure of Namor and the rising genius of an artist who would go on to redefine the medium. Such a beautifully designed title splash. From all the ornamentation of the title, to the scroll credits. Mignola was definitely out to make a statement with this page. Congratulations my friend. At last you have your beloved Subby!

Wow! I love everything about this splash--The hand-lettering, the moody background, the exaggerated perspective of Namor swimming towards the reader! Just a fabulous example of Mike Mignola's early work! Congrats!
