Description

An unpublished cover (I’d guess to issue 1 but editorial likely requested a more dynamic image) to NICK FURY'S HOWLING COMMANDOS, Marvel’s 2005 late answer to DC Creature Commandos.

The series was not particularly great(ly) written by Giffen but I liked Francisco Image (Aspen, actually) flavored art on it with some quality fill ins. The group included many of Marvel well known monsters.

Here we have the mummy, a Monster of Frankenstein clone, a werewolf/vampire hybrid, a true werewolf in the foreground (who is NOT Werewolf by Night). That werewolf was my incentive in getting the cover as his over-the-top rendition was appealing to me in the sense that it’s different to what we are used to in US comics and is looking towards Manga and Japanese animé in terms of influences.

The precision of his pencil line and Eduardo’s approach the anatomy with a wavering line to define the muscles remind me of Steve Skroce’s (Gambit and Spiderman era).

But why I got this piece was not only based on its artistic merit but was a catharsis of some sort. Earlier in my collecting career, I had bought a (badly printed) blue line inked version of the same piece either from the inker himself or another collector, who did not clearly disclose what it was. You may remember those days when people did not know (what they were selling-buying), hid that fact on purpose or insisted when questioned that it was the “final published cover”. Upon receiving the piece, I did not like what I saw (the blueline being too visible) and did not like the process for which I did not care then, up to this day.

That piece is long gone (https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=125922), but the frustration remained. So, when this one popped at auction, I “healed myself” by getting it cheap. We all have those 😉

A top-tier level of detail!  This would have been an adventure for whoever took on inking.

From the era of tiny waists, huge tits and even bigger guns!

I love that you “healed myself” by getting it cheap! 😅

Just checked out all the covers for this series. While it lost the number one spot. It def should of made the series somewhere down the line.

Ahhhh!  Original comic art: a sweet, sweet salve to heal those tricky old blue-line wounds!  It's the circle of life!  Terrific and fun piece here, F M; I went absolutely bonkers when I heard Marvel was doing a monster team called the "howling commandos" (brilliant!) but remember thinking it was dreadful and never came back after the first issue.  It sounds like this series may have wounded us both in different ways!  Need a monster team-up salve, it sounds like... :) Really nicely penciled rendering of some over-the-top 90's "gizmotry" (gotta arm the monsters?) that reminds me of Keith Giffen's 'Trencher' in a way...?  Maybe?  Weird, but that's what I think of...  Very cool piece, F M, and I'm glad things have achieved balance and been karmically righted. :)
