DescriptionWonder City by Victor Fusté (w) and Jared Cullum (a) tells the story of two sisters who have lost their parents. Their mother died from disease, but their father, Thomas Riley, was murdered. He was an intrepid explorer known the world over for his fantastic discoveries - think Indiana Jones. Elizabeth/Lizzy is the elder sister and she's trying to fill in. Alexandra/Alex is the younger sister and has the same urge to explore and question that her father had. Alex wants the answers to her questions and she has a lot. Why was he murdered? For what was he searching when he was killed? Why is the city full of dead people? Will the girls kill each other? These questions and more are answered in the book. I was taken by Jared's art when I walked to his table at HeroesCon 2024. Against the wall was his work for the HeroesCon auction. It was at first glance a very nice plein-air painting of a harbor with a large fishing trawler at dock. A closer look reveals that the ship is crewed by Popeye's gang - Olive, Swee'pea, and Jeep are at the bow, Pluto is sitting near the cabin and Popeye is about to board. It was marvelous and raised a lot of money to fund HeroesCon. Go Jared. Looking at his table, I saw a huge stack of pages of painted art. Among them was the three page sequence above. I loved them at once. I loved them more when they turned out to be quite affordable. I thumbed through the pile and found these. In this sequence, Alex and Lizzy have a little feud that leads to Alex dropping her baseball bat and attracting the attention of the dead. In the next page, they are surrounded by the dead and are about to join them. Suddenly, the calvary comes over the top of the 3rd page and a battle ensues. I love the work and the storytelling. Highly recommended. Social/Sharing |

Alex I couldn't agree more. Jared's Wonder City stuff is amazing. I picked up 2 pages myself. And when his commission list opens I'm going to jump on it!

I can only imagine that they pulled this off better than the Madame Web movie trailer that had the line, "He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died" Real attractive cartooning and color scheme of purples and pinks.

Love the cartoony style here, and the fact that these pages were painted is all the more impressive (great color palette too, especially all the pinks and purples). Gonna have to check out his work in the future (and also make my way back down to Heroes again). Congrats, and thanks for sharing!
