Description

I love Edwina Dumm's work, and this original Cap Stubbs daily, dated October 1926, is the earliest one I've ever seen. You'll notice that Cap's dog is the earlier bulldog version, before the terrier Tippie made his entrance, which wound up lasting decades. While the drawing, with its strong and varied line, is quite beautiful, the history of the piece, as I've been able to put together, is quite interesting.

Even though the daily is dated "Oct. 1926", it actually ran in the Dayton Herald on October 29, 1925. This daily and the two clippings that came with it, the Gasoline Alley and Little Orphan Annie pieces below, all ran on the front page of the second section of the newspaper, in support of a Children's Home bond. Here's the story in a nutshell:

The Montgomery County Children's Home was built in 1867, and had enough room to house the 70 orphans in their charge. By 1925, the number had swelled to 270, and the building was in disrepair. The bond was an attempt to raise $400,000 to purchase land and building a larger and better home for the orphans. From all of the editorials and articles that I've read, the public was very much in favor of the bond, though I haven't seen anything that shows that bond actually passed. I do have some doubts as, in the research I've done, a Dr. Charles Shawen donated 20 acres of land for the home in 1926. Shawen Acres, the new children's home, was built in 1928, closing its doors in 1977.

I have to give special thanks to Shawna Woodard, from the Dayton Metro Library's Magazine & Special Collections, for all of her research assistance. She sent me a number of scans and images, some of which can be seen below.
